Simplify Your Holiday Shopping with the La Mariposa Gift Card Program

gift card logoFundraising While You Shop!

We all love to find easy ways to earn money for our school without selling! Gift Card fundraising is a no-selling program that allows you to raise money for La Mariposa simply by purchasing gift cards for your everyday purchases and gifts.

Here’s how it’s done:

You simply purchase gift cards from your school coordinator, Lisa Carraway, at face value and she will order those cards at a reduced price. The difference in money is an instant rebate for our school. It’s really that simple!

Here is an example:

Purchase a gift card for the GAP for $50, Coordinator buys the gift card and they will contribute 14% back to La Mariposa.  You in return get your gift card for $50 to the GAP and the school has now made $7.00 instantly!

All retailers have different contribution % so check out the retailers list for more info.

Order forms and retailers list are located here.

La Mariposa Gets $$$ When You Spend with Your Target REDcard

The Target “Take Charge of Education” Program allows you to earn money for La Mariposa while doing your typical household shopping with your Target REDcard.  Target donates 1% of every dollar back to our school.  1% doesn’t seem like a lot, but when you add up what you spend per year at Target and multiply it by the number of families at La Mariposa, it adds up fast.   Continue reading

Missing A Bike…or Two?

Following the end of the 11/12 school year, two bikes were left in the bike racks.  Our custodian has been storing then on campus in the hopes that someone would come forward to claim them.  It’s now 9 months later and no one has come forward.  We have one mountain bike and one BMX style bike.  If you think one of these bikes belongs to your family, please contact Kamala at kamblivity@gmail.com and let us know what color they are.  We will hold the bikes until April 15th.  After April 15th we will donate the bikes to someone less fortunate.  Thank you!

La Mariposa Student Eco Team Conducts Waste Audit

by Natalie Swarts, Eco Team Leader, La Mariposa PTA

“There is only so much room available for solid waste disposal, and because landfills are so tightly packed, it takes a great deal of time for material to decompose. The easiest way to reduce solid waste is to reduce your consumption of daily products. Be cautious of what you buy, and whether anything you are going to put in a trash can really belongs there.” Earth911.com

La Mariposa completed our first Waste Audit on December 13th.   Students and parents worked together to sort everything that was thrown away during an entire school day.  The Eco Team met on January 18th to discuss the Waste Audit results and talk about goals for reducing waste.  Take a look at the chart below:

Waste Audit Chart

54 lbs of unopened food was collected in a single day.

54 lbs of unopened food was collected in a single day.

Participants were surprised to discover that we had 54 lbs of unopened food, including whole sandwiches, cartons of milk, bags of chips and untouched granola bars.  (picture) Additionally, we found almost 90 lbs of partially eaten food and 7 lbs of ziplock bags – from only one day!  In total, we threw away over 300 pounds of trash, which means our school likely sends over 54,000 lbs (or 24 tons) of waste to the landfill each year.
