On Monday, May 30, the Camarillo Council of PTA’s held it’s annual Honorary Service Awards (HSA) Banquet. The evening opened with PVSD’s “Off Beats” Jazz Band and a gallery of entries from this year’s Reflections Program.
Attendees were also treated to a performance from Tierra Linda’s girls chorus.
Cam Council Awards were presented first. Our own Past President, Kim Dawson, received an HSA for her work as Council President for the last two years. Each school presented their awards next.
La Mariposa presented awards to the following individuals:
Damien Martinez – Very Special Person Award
Damien’s kids don’t attend our school, but he didn’t flinch when we asked him to donate his time and expertise in installing more than 500 tiles on our MPR wall. Not only did his company, Kodiak Construction, complete the installation for free, but they also led us to a donation of all of the tiles from Tile City. Thanks to his generosity, every La Mariposa family had the opportunity to celebrate and create a tile for free.
Denise Bolish—Honorary Service Award
Denise is most recognizable on campus as one of our record breaking Jog-a-thon co-chairs, leading La Mariposa in raising $54,000 this year. But for those of us who see the behind the scenes, we know Denise can be found helping our with many committees including Science Night, Dinner Dance, School Tool Box, and in the classroom. Denise is a well loved and respected member of the La Mariposa community.
Nicole Sadowsky—Continuing Service Award
Nicole wears two hats at La Mariposa. She is both a parent and a teacher. She received an Honorary Service Award in 2010 and has served on our board for a number of years contributing both her invaluable perspective as teacher and fun ideas as parent. She has been the student leadership advisor for ten years and has helped with the Rotary Track team for years. We all love Nicole for her enthusiasm and spirit.
Romi Henderson—Continuing Service Award
Romy has co-chaired our Dinner Dance since the event started four years ago. She has been our “go to girl” for getting sponsors and donations building on each year’s successes to the tune of a record breaking $40,000 in 2012. Her charisma is infectious and it is hard to imagine a dinner dance without her.
Jennifer Flittie—Continuing Service Award
Wow. It is hard to find a place to start with Jennifer. There would be no Science night at La Mariposa, we’d run out of books at the book fair, we’d never know how to hang anything in the MPR. We can’t keep track of all the church groups or boys scout and girls scout troops she has led, educated and inspired. There will definitely be a hole left in our PTA as she moves on with her daughter to Las Colinas.
Kamala Nahas – Golden Oak Award
Kamala has put everything she can into La Mariposa for the last seven years. She has done a wonderful job as our PTA President along with the many other chair positions that she holds. She also volunteers at Las Colinas’s PTSA, and with the New High School. Our city and community are extremely lucky to have her working for us!
