Held every two years, CAO focuses on ten individual events that include: Mathematics, Science, English Grammar, US History, Current Events, Speech, Art, and Creative Writing. There are two divisions–Division I is sixth to eight grade students and Division ll is fourth and fifth graders. Students compete by taking a written test, except for Speech, Art, and Creative Writing. Students receive ribbons for their finish at the School Level and the top three students in each category move on to the City Preliminaries. At this point students take a more difficult test offsite, at the Boys and Girls Club. Those competing in speech go through three rounds of competition in front of experienced judges. The top six in each event move on to the City Finals, held and televised from the Camarillo City Hall Council Chambers. For art and creative writing, the city prelims also act as the final round.
Congratulations to the following La Mariposa Students for making it to the city finals and receiving their medals during the awards ceremony on March 9, 2012:
- Benita B., 6th Place, Mathematics
- Alan L., 4th Place, US History
- Atharva N., 5th Place, CA History
- Abby C., 4th Place, English Grammar
- Clarice C., 4th Place, Creative Writing
Along with the individual categories, there is also the Super Quiz competition. This year, twenty-five teams of five students each represented their schools. The topic this year was world ecology and all the questions came from the reference book “Earth Matters”. The Super Quiz is an opportunity for students to work together, developing team work and team spirit as well as an in depth knowledge of the year’s topic.
La Mariposa is extremely proud of all our CAO participants. Please take a moment to check out our school winners!
Special thanks to PTA Volunteer Tami Michelson for being the site coordinator and the many, many parents that helped along the way with data entry, judging, proctoring, tabulating, and more…and a big tiger hug goes to Miss Hughes for coaching the Super Quiz team.
